

















Sacred Valley Llama Trek
Description: The half-day visit to the Llama Pack Project is an educational and cultural experience in which the visitor will become familiar with the project, meet members of the Local Guilds of Llama Breeders of the Urubamba Mountain Range and walk with the project’s genetic bank llamas learning about the benefits of using llamas as pack animals and the importance of the conservation of mountain ecosystems. The visit includes a trek with llamas herded in the traditional Andean style in company of local llama farmers. Llamas will walk in front carrying the picnic that will be shared in the rest station while passengers assist with herding.
Duration: 4 – 5 hours. Difficulty: Easy / Moderate. Start time: 8:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. End time: 12:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. Trekking distance: 2.2 k.m. (1.4 miles) Maximum Altitude: 3,460 – 3,520 meters (11,350 – 10,530 feet) Starting point: Llama Pack Base Camp, Pumahuanca Valley, Urubamba.

Important Information

For this activity it is recommended to have been at altitude for at least 1.5 days before the activity.
It is important to be prepared for the visit which will be mainly outdoors. Please bring sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirt), bug repellent, comfortable clothes for walking in the mountains, layered clothing for variable weather, suitable shoes for walking in the mountains, a light backpack to carry basic belongings, a warm jacket, a rain jacket, a bottle of water to refill, cash in case they want to buy handicrafts or give tips and camera. IMPORTANT: There will be a 15 minute tolerance before we start the activity if there are more visitors and a maximum of 1 hour tolerance after which we will consider NO SHOW.
Location: You must be at the Llama Pack Base Camp located in the Pumahuanca Valley (20 minutes from downtown Urubamba) at 9:00 a.m. to start the morning activity or at 2:00 p.m. to start the afternoon activity. View location.
Pick-up: For the morning activity transportation must be at 12:30 p.m. at the Base Camp to pick up passengers who can arrive between 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. For the afternoon activity transportation must be at 5:15 p.m. at the Base Camp to pick up passengers who can arrive between 5:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
There is no public transportation nearby. Please coordinate transportation previously. You may also request transportation through us for an additional fee.

You will be accompanied by a bilingual Peruvian interpreter (Spanish/English), at least two members of the Guild of Llama Breeders (on average there will be one Guild member every two visitors) and a group of approximately 10 llamas.

The llamas will be packed and herded in the traditional Andean style. You will assist the community members to contain the llamas in one place during the packing activity. You may request your hosts to participate packing a load. Some llamas will allow petting but in most cases direct contact with llamas is not recommended as they are raised in semi-wild conditions. At the time of the trek the llamas walk in a group in front of the visitors and the llama farmers herd them from behind, maintaining a prudent distance.

The Base Camp has a restroom and a warehouse where passengers can leave excess baggage during the activity. The resting station has a latrine available. We recommend taking a bag to collect personal waste.

The risks of the visit are those inherent to any outdoor activity for which the visitor will assume full responsibility. (Variable weather, irregular roads, steep slopes, slippery sections, landslides, falling rocks, protruding branches, exposure to insects, etc.) In case visitor booked through a travel agency, the agency requesting the service must inform passengers about the risks of the activity and provide them with necessary recommendations. The agency assumes responsibility for the passengers.
